Global Volunteers has established a development partnership with the village leaders of Malungeni, a small rural community about a three-hour drive north and inland of the coastal city, East London in Eastern Cape Province. Daily life here is on a subsistance level, with no reliable government assistance to address unemployment, poor health care and the growing number of HIV/AIDS orphans. The 677 families form a cohesive community under the leadership of a chief, who serves a paramount chief. The local chief decides on all developmental projects with the councilors and the community representatives. Education and capacity building are the foundational elements of our ongoing relationship.
