Global Volunteers Network of Care Worldwide

A Global Volunteer in ItalyCiao Volunteers!!

This has been a productive year for Global Volunteers in Italy, So far in 2008, 92 Global Volunteers have served on 10 teams -- teaching English to 817 local students in Ostuni, Monopoli, Cisternino, Carovignio, Ceglie, Torre Santa Susanna, Erchie, Martina Franca, Fasano and Franca Villa -- contributing to a total of 710 hours of English instruction!

These towns of the Puglia region are in what we call “The heel of Italy.” Here, we teach conversational English to students from elementary through high school, and we also give lessons to seniors and to children in a local foster home. On some programs, we also teach English to local government officials, and recently, we even had a team serve in a culinary high school.

In April, we had three teams in combined into one team of 21 volunteers in Ostuni. This marked our 150th team to serve in Italy! Being one of the largest teams, the local government sent a folk dancing group to teach volunteers a local dancing routine. This team also enjoyed a wonderful farewell party at the senior club and the foster home where volunteers and local people sang Italian and American songs and tasted local food and wine.

A Global Volunteer in ItalyThis summer was a busy season with three teams and lots of fun. The first June team taught Government officials in Ostuni and Fasano and the second and third summer teams worked at a music themed summer camp. The volunteers had a challenging job communicating with local educators who spoke no English. However, volunteers happily rose to the challenge, and everyone had a great time. The children, between the ages of six and 12, were happy to make new friends and learn English.

I would like to use this opportunity to send thanks, from the bottom of my heart and in the name of Puglia region, to all the volunteers who have come to this part of Italy. You have touched so many lives! Here volunteers empower local adults and children, and are spreading the message of waging peace and promoting justice. Please keep on coming to Italy!

GRAZIE MILLE

Sincerely,

Ana Capone
