The End of Week One in Calderón

DSC01206DSC01196Today was one of those bittersweet kind of days. To start it was the Fourth of July and I think for most of us it was our first time spending the Fourth in another country, so that was exciting! It was also another day we got to spend at the daycare helping all of the kids which is something that is truly special. Though what made today so bittersweet is although we all love it here, we had to say goodbye to some of our fellow volunteers whom we have worked with and grown close with in the past week. Sapna, Rowhan, Shaan, Julia, Manning, and Anne are all heading home this weekend because their week here is over and I think I speak for all of us when I say we are really going to miss them and absolutely loved having them here with us. The kids at the daycare center even showed their appreciation by dancing to music and giving all the leaving volunteers handmade cards, which was completely adorable to watch and to me, it is so special to know that you can make a difference in someone’s life in just a week.

DSC01236Another big accomplishment at the daycare center today was completely drawing out the mural on the outside wall; it looked outstanding and I know once it’s painted it’ll look incredible. Personally, I left after lunch because I was sick so I’m not sure what else happened and I had no voice to ask people but everyone’s days here so far always seem to be great! After some rest I ended up feeling a lot better for dinner, and we all ended up going to Vista Hermosa where we got to eat yummy food and had a gorgeous roof top view of Quito – truly the perfect way to end the night and a perfect way to end Fourth of July in another country. Overall, I think this past week we have really come together as a team. A week here has taught us how fortunate we are and how amazing it feels to have the opportunity to help others and impact people’s lives in the best ways possible. Most importantly, I think this whole week we have really lived up to Martin’s Message of the Day by Mahatma Gandhi: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Not only has this past week been fantastic, but I’m excited for what this next week (our last week here) has in store for us!
