Making a small difference

This morning, as I was walking down the hall with Delia in the walker, we stopped to say hello to a boy named Bogdan. He looks to be about 13 or 14 and has a cast on one foot. As we walked back, he said, “Inspirat”, which means “inspired.” I’m not sure precisely what he […]

Discovering what makes them laugh

Busy day today at St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital. Today was the first day that I saw the importance of multitasking with the children. Bouncing Livinia, reading to Alina, and tickling Lucia all at the same time and it worked well! Today Mitchell discovered what makes Luca laugh! Luca loves having the big animal ball bounced […]

Goodbye, Barlad

It was our last day of working with the children. Gabi and Alexandra left in the morning. Gabi will apparently be going to a foster family and Alexandra was going back to the placement center. As the afternoon drew to a close, we said our goodbyes to the children who have made such a special […]

A wonderful day at Takitumu school

We had a wonderful day at Takitumu school. We were greeted with many “hellos” and “good mornings” as we made our way off the bus. All of us spent time reading with the grades five and six while Jack spent time in his class. When we were done with the older children, we moved on to […]

A Fun Class – and Then a Cultural Night Out

Mary Sue and I had prepared an outside scavenger hunt with a difference to start the day. We split the class into two groups and we each accompanied a group on the search for various things we had written on a list, such as something of a certain color, hard, soft, small, tall, rectangular, square, […]

Stories of Labyrinths and Minotaurs

Sometimes, for a moment, things go really well if you just let it play out. In anticipation of our proposed afternoon visit to Knossos, we asked the class to tell us what Lesley and I should know before our visit. It appeared that all had been there, but it was one of our advanced students who […]

Working on a very important brochure

Today was spent almost entirely in the teacher’s salon working with Karen on one of the most important tasks so far: creating a bilingual pamphlet detailing the five main projects undertaken by the students of Colegio. These projects include: –  raising and selling both young and mature pigs (for commercial and culinary purposes, respectively) –  caring for nearly […]

Feeling welcome in the community

We had another amazing day! We went to school and had a great time with the children. After just three days, it is surprising how comfortable the children are with us and we are with them! Many of them greet us by name and remember some of the things we have taught them! We (Olivia, […]

We Discover Extraordinarily Bright Kids

Today the kids did many different activities. They learned different English verbs such as “eat”, “be hungry”, and “laugh.” With these newly learned verbs we had the girls compete with the boys as we tested their knowledge. During the second half of class time we went over common phrases and sentences with the kids such as […]

Feeling spoiled by our team leader in Costa Rica

Our scheduled plan to paint a classroom today had to be postponed as the pain had not yet arrived. (It is an oil-based paint they use and the machine to make it required repair.) So we will plan to paint later in the week. In preparation for the afternoon classroom (ecotourism), we went up to […]
