Helping Kids With So Much Potential in St. Lucia

Overall, it was a really good day helping kids with so much potential in St. Lucia.  I’ve been working at Kids Step Early Learning Center, where this morning, we had our daily assembly of singing songs and announcing news. When we switched off into our separate teaching groups, I read a book to the tiny […]

Making Progress Through Hundreds of Interactions

Some volunteers were able to participate in an early morning yoga class offered by one of the volunteers. We met for an excellent breakfast and had our team meeting right after breakfast.  Warren drove all the volunteers to their assigned locations. It was a rainy day, but there were periods of clear weather. I was […]

Helping the children makes me happy

Today was a very good day. I helped with both classes – the babies and the three-year-olds. Hannah, Rita, Olivia, Alexandra, Mark, Amy, and my mom stayed with their classes from yesterday. I am getting to know the babies and the three-year-olds very well and it […]

Getting the daycare routine down

Already by Tuesday we were starting to get the routine down. The breakfast was the same, the bus ride to the daycare center was the same, but at snack time it changed. It was my turn to take the children to the baños (bathrooms) to wash hands. The nice little line-up had exploded into a […]

I Give Love, but Get Back More in Return

A volunteer learns that in working with children, you give and receive in Peru more than you expect. Each day is similar yet unique. We are in a much different place than we were a week ago. PPA now feels like a second home. Today we carried various bags of new toys, books, and school […]

Making a small difference

This morning, as I was walking down the hall with Delia in the walker, we stopped to say hello to a boy named Bogdan. He looks to be about 13 or 14 and has a cast on one foot. As we walked back, he said, “Inspirat”, which means “inspired.” I’m not sure precisely what he […]

Discovering what makes them laugh

Busy day today at St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital. Today was the first day that I saw the importance of multitasking with the children. Bouncing Livinia, reading to Alina, and tickling Lucia all at the same time and it worked well! Today Mitchell discovered what makes Luca laugh! Luca loves having the big animal ball bounced […]

Goodbye, Barlad

It was our last day of working with the children. Gabi and Alexandra left in the morning. Gabi will apparently be going to a foster family and Alexandra was going back to the placement center. As the afternoon drew to a close, we said our goodbyes to the children who have made such a special […]

A wonderful day at Takitumu school

We had a wonderful day at Takitumu school. We were greeted with many “hellos” and “good mornings” as we made our way off the bus. All of us spent time reading with the grades five and six while Jack spent time in his class. When we were done with the older children, we moved on to […]

A Fun Class – and Then a Cultural Night Out

Mary Sue and I had prepared an outside scavenger hunt with a difference to start the day. We split the class into two groups and we each accompanied a group on the search for various things we had written on a list, such as something of a certain color, hard, soft, small, tall, rectangular, square, […]
