Conquering Adversity and Planting New Flowers

66Thursday morning began as a typical Costa Rican day with brief showers and sunshine as we headed to another delicious breakfast by Tatiana. After many goodbyes and photographs with the Knox Sports group, we watched them drive away in their vans as we headed down to another day of service. We met our fellow volunteer students and we set to work on painting the western hemisphere and attaching basketball hoops. Sounds simple, but oh my, lots of challenges. After an hour or so of fighting with way too short bolts and welded frames in the way, we conquered adversity and set off to some pleasant landscaping. While most of the Global Volunteers worked with Jorge’s students, some of us were given a tour of the campus by the ecotourism students who were practicing their three-month-old English language skills. We were totally impressed by the student’s new abilities with English while showing us their school. One of the favorite areas we toured was the pig house. We were fortunate to be able to see a pig being slaughtered which was going to be served at a special event for the school. After lunch we continued with more landscaping, hauling dirt from the hillside, cleaning up weeds, and planting new flowers and plants. As a social treat to conclude the day, we were given dance lessons by the students and we all mastered the salsa dance. Look for us on America’s Got Talent: The American Salsa Kings! But seriously, it was a delight to watch these beautiful young people dancing and enjoying each other after a productive days work.
