May 1st in Greece!
May 1st in Greece.
May the 1st (May Day) is a national holiday in Greece and probably one of the only holidays that does not have any religious background. It is a celebration of spring and also “workers day”. Union workers gather in the large cities for demonstrations while families take to the countryside for picnics and to gather wild flowers to make a wreath or bouquets. These are then hung outside above the door ways to dry.
So what did we do today???
It was such a lovely warm day so we decided to take a walk to the beach. We were extremely surprised at how many different types of wild flowers we found. We gathered some of them and returned to our garden for a BBQ of chops, Greek salad and wine .After a short “siesta” we sat outside to make our wreath. All in all it was a wonderful day spent close to nature!
