Team 219 Getting Orientated and Prepared to Serve

Global Volunteers China Team 219 Arrived in Kunming! Here is the team’s journal for the first day, November 15, 2015 .

Message of the Day: Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment of the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. – Leo Buscaglia

The team’s first meeting was called by the In-Country Manager to draw up a preliminary program as well as the overall program plan. The team members greeted each other enthusiastically. A round of self-introduction was made. The In-Country Manager then started by discussing GV’s program in China; its philosophy and services; team building; policies and guidelines; health and safety; and the Team 219 work program. The Manager then requested the team to each take on responsibility for the four areas, and the team members enthusiastically agreed; Journal Manager; Health and Safety Coordinator; Team Photographer; and Free Time Coordinator.

The team then discussed “What makes for an effective team”. Each participant offered his/her opinion. A consensus thus resulted:” To listen; to collaborate; to communicate; to share; be open; have fun; equal time; be respectful; and be flexible.

The team lastly discussed the Work Program for the duration of the team, gathering the topics for use during each session. Each team member in turn offered his/her ideas. We were to plan for at least the initial several days of the period, until we get a better assessment of the classes so we may do further fine-tuning to incorporate more project work. The team then was recessed so each may do some project research, utilizing the library material in the possession of the In-Country-Manager. The team will re-convene after the initial sessions of interaction with the program attendees.

It was a productive planning session.
