We care about you! You are our most valuable resource, and we want you to stay healthy so you can continue to serve children and families – and return home safe and well. We also want you to be able to make an informed decision about your service travel with Global Volunteers.
At this time, the World Health Organization (WHO) advises that international travel is safe, despite the presence of the new coronavirus (COVID-19). Further, WHO opposes banning travel to countries with COVID-19 outbreaks. However, we have suspended our China program, and we’re monitoring the situation closely as classifications are updated worldwide. See more here.
You can avoid contracting this virus while at home or abroad. Proper and rigorous hygiene practices continue to be your best defense against illness, including COVID-19, according to Dr. Carmen Dolea, Head of the International Health Regulations Secretariat at WHO. Washing your hands frequently and thoroughly is key.

In over 36 years of facilitating international service travel, we know that coming in contact with viruses while traveling anywhere is common, and we have always planned for that. Not only have we promoted established techniques of hand washing with soap and water, and recommended hand sanitizing products to help keep volunteers healthy, we teach these simple techniques to children and parents in our partner communities to help prevent the transmission of communicable disease. Further, Global Volunteers clearly identifies the risks of travel, and recommends taking standard precautions on all trips – domestic or international.
We also agree with WHO that interrupting global travel for no good reason is a damaging action, because needed aid and technical support may be prevented from getting to affected countries, and may disrupt business, and cause negative social and economic impacts. This is devastating to our partners, families, and children worldwide. They need your service. Global Volunteers always holds your health and safety above all program considerations, because you are our most valuable resource, and we care about you.
