Sally Nist of Virginia participated on a two-week service program in Costa Rica in June this year alongside her 16-year-old granddaughter, Nicole Cron. Sally is retired from the Department of State and has traveled to over 100 countries in the world. She describes the time she spent serving in Costa Rica as life-changing. She took this opportunity to serve the people of the cloudforest region of Monteverde, Costa Rica and to share international travel and service with her granddaughter.

Sally wrote in an email to her team leader, Maggie Bjorklund, following their program: “Nicole and I are still reminiscing about our experiences. We will always have this special time that is only ours to share. It was a wonderful time and your insight and education was an important part of that.”

“Our volunteer service was everything I had hoped it would be and more.  I was so proud of Nicole and the way she stepped up with no whining or complaints.”

Nicole says this service experience helped her gain more perspective about understanding through cultures as well as have more empathy for others.

Undoubtedly, spending two weeks abroad, serving others, learning about another culture, and exploring the beautiful cloud forest of Costa Rica will give this grandmother-granddaughter pair memories they will cherish long into the future.
