Team #158 has arrived in Quito, Ecuador and consists of three scholarship recipients from the University of Iowa – Lauren, Jordan, and Zoe.
Highlights from Team Journal entry for Monday, May 18:
Yesterday was our first full day in Quito, but today was our first day in daycare center two. It was an amazing day. While the drive to the daycare was a bit different than any other drive I have taken, I was surrounded by beauty and I did not expect Ecuador to be so simple, yet beautiful. The tías are some of the most welcoming, caring, and selfless people. The children absolutely adore them and their heart to serve. This daycare center, the tías and the routines are not only what I expected, but so much more. The children are adorable and charming, working in the daycare today only made my passion for wanting to be a teacher stronger because I saw the impact that each tía had on the children, and I hope to do the same with my students in the near future. Arriving back at Hotel Sandmelis, we went on a walk, talked about our day referencing many of the children, and ate dinner with César, the hotel owner. It was not only another great dinner, but also great company and some practice of our Spanish skills. Our exhausting first day ended with laughter and some quality snuggling while we pushed our beds together to watch some tv.

Message of the Day – Maggie: “Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
