Spring Festival Shopping Fair in Xi’an

As the Chinese New Year is getting really close, the City of Xi’an, which has a popualation of over 9 million, is a lot emptier as most migrant workers have traveled home for the Chinese Spring Festival.

The Chinese New Year or Spring Festival for 2015 will be on February 19. People will get a 7-day holiday starting from February 18, the New Year’Eve day.

Traditionally, the New Year celebrations run from the New Year’s Eve, the last day of the last month of the lunar calendar, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first month. For this most biggest and important festival in China, it’s important that you get home on the New Year’s Eve for the family gathering and big dinner no matter how far and difficult it is.

Red Couplets Made on Site


On the New Years Eve day, doors will be decorated with red couplets that has Chinese ink writing that carries the family’s wish for the new year, So for the last day, people are trying to make home by all means, stores are packed with people doing the last minute shopping, street vendors are gone and replaced with traditional New Year decorations such as paper cuts, paper door gods, red lanterns, etc.
