I always love the first full day in Cuba. Some of us attended mass, giving us a nice walk through the streets of Havana to the church. It was a windy day, with the off and on threat of rain.
We spent time at Muraleando, a community art project. I love seeing the progress and changes that happen there. There is a new corner “park” where once stood a huge, deep pile of trash. They spent days clearing the site and then put in a bench along with a mural and statue. Now, it looks like a nice place to sit and enjoy a conversation. The afternoon was spent having conversational exchanges with our Cuban friends. I always appreciate the honesty and openess that our friends have. We feel very comfortable talking about anything: what life is like for Cubans, political ideas, dreams, and frustrations. The evening was spent out on my favorite back patio: Hotel Nacional, where Mojitos are sipped and music is enjoyed. Although, no music for us, not sure why. Several of us got together from the group and had great conversations instead. A fabulous day in La Habana!
