Five Joys of Volunteering in Portugal

Why you should volunteer in Portiugal

Global Volunteers Jim and Mary Diel share their top 5 reasons for volunteering in Portugal.

1. The local people

Working with the children and adults on their English studies is certainly a highlight of volunteering in Portugal (Beja). Eager, enthusiastic and respectful are just a few of the words that describe our interactions with these students. You’ll love every minute!

2. The charming city of Beja

Built on a hilltop with winding cobblestone streets and whitewashed buildings, this old city is magnificent. Staying right in the heart of downtown with walking access to everything is really great.

3. The local cuisine

Food is delicious and plentiful in Portugal. Since returning, one of the new staples in our diet is Portuguese vegetable soup. Easy to make, tasty and nutritious. Loved it all, but here’s a good tip: pork dishes are made with their famous “Black Pig” and they’re not to be missed!

4. The rich history of the region

Moorish and Roman history and artifacts abound in the Alentejo (beyond the Tagus River) region in Portugal. In Beja, you will find it’s iconic castle, archaeological sites and museums dedicated to these ancient civilizations.

5. The warm and welcoming community

Memorable personal interactions make visiting Beja incredibly rewarding. Some of our most unforgettable moments took place in the shops, cafes or on the street. Without exception, the people we met made us feel welcome in their community. We are looking forward to participating on another Portugal Service Program in Beja this year!
