ENDING POVERTY, ONE CHILD AT THE TIME

Reaching Children’s Potential Program

Goal 1 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to “End poverty in all its forms everywhere.” Eliminating global poverty is a complex and extremely challenging goal that requires substantial economic, social, and political systemic changes. However, providing comprehensive support to children individually is shown to lift them out of poverty and illuminate their future. This ongoing assistance is Global Volunteers’ Reaching Children’s Potential Program (RCP) model.

The RCP Program is a child-focused, parent-driven, community-led, volunteer-supported comprehensive approach that invests in child and maternal nutrition, health, and education.

Thinking inside the box:

SUPPORTING THE LANDLESS POOR

Global Volunteers, through its Reaching Children’s Potential (RCP) Program, partners with EarthBox to tackle food insecurity and improve family nutrition in rural Tanzania.

Since 2012, this collaboration has provided families with EarthBoxes —innovative container gardening systems that yield significantly higher harvests than traditional in-ground gardens while requiring less space and effort. Designed to be set on tables, EarthBoxes make gardening accessible for pregnant women and mothers carrying children, eliminating the physical strain of bending over and reducing risks from soil-borne diseases and weeds.

As part of the RCP Program, pregnant women receive four EarthBoxes and mothers with children under two receive five, enabling them to grow nutrient-rich vegetables such as tomatoes, spinach, cucumbers, lettuce, peppers, and Chinese cabbage right at home. Seedlings are cultivated in a community greenhouse and transferred to EarthBoxes, which use coco peat, peat moss, and locally sourced dolomite as growing mediums.

Volunteers and local staff support families in planting and maintaining these gardens, ensuring both sustainability and immediate nutritional benefits. By integrating EarthBox technology into its holistic approach, Global Volunteers supports Tanzanian families to achieve greater food security and improved health outcomes.

Inside the EarthBox®: A Complete Growing Solution

“EarthBoxes are very crucial to my family because we can get vitamins and nutrients without struggling.”

– Aika Kiungo, RCP mom

"I have grown green peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers in my EarthBox. Vegetables are very important to my family’s health because they give the body energy, and some of the vegetables have minerals like Vitamin C, which helps in body building."

– Robina Mbata, RCP mom

"I was very happy and excited to obtain the EarthBoxes because since the beginning I thought that they would be very helpful in providing vegetables continually with no long distance searching for them. And that is what happened – we get vegetables every day and have them every time we need to cook."

– Felista Chotamasege, RCP mom

"I was very happy when I was given the EarthBoxes with cucumbers, spinach, and green pepper. They have been very helpful to me and my family. I water the EarthBoxes every day as instructed to make sure that I get good results. My child likes cucumbers a lot and I’m happy that I now have easy access to them."

– Rachel Kigala, RCP mom

"I have these vegetables readily available to cook for my whole family, so I really enjoy having the EarthBoxes."

– Emola Mbata, RCP mom
