A Day at a Time in Peru – Building a Partnership for Progress

complex. Today cannot be summarized by listing the things that we all did today.  Rather, everything can best be described by the passion that all of us are putting into this team effort.  As a team, we have a fierce passion that is increasing each day. The medical team is a force of their own!  Three incredibly bright, dynamic, accomplished ladies have come to Peru to help the clinic staff.  I know they are accomplishing a great deal, seeing so many patients in a short period of time.  All of the children are fortunate to have come to the clinic while Penny, Annette and Carolyn are here.  Listening at dinner to their stories from the day gives real insight into the love and laughter that they share with each other and every patient they see. Volunteers are enjoying current assignments… (Search hits: 5 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Score: 425.54)

International Committee of the Red Cross and the Sustainable Development Goals

…share common ground with SDG 16. As a neutral, impartial and independent humanitarian organization, our response is based solely on the needs of affected people, some do not relate to the SDGs but many do. For instance: We work with communities and a variety of local actors to safeguard and restore people’s safe access to health care, education, water and sanitation in rural and urban areas affected by armed conflict and violence (SDGs 3, 4, 6, 11) We support affected communities to maintain and recover their livelihoods including through food production and income generation activities (SDGs 1, 2, 8), and we look to strengthen people’s resilience to the combined impact of armed conflict and the climate and environment crisis, in addition to reducing the environmental footprint of our own activity (SDGs 13); Our support to women and children who may… (Search hits: 3 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Esperança and the Sustainable Development Goals

…connection between the issues and struggles of people from afar to the supporters and individuals at home. Drawing on our collective humanity builds understanding and empathy. The SDGs are an essential tool to communicate the gravity of our challenges and the importance of our work. Esperança works with rural communities in Nicaragua to provide land grants and agricultural education to improve the sustainability of small farmers in the region. (Photo: Esperança) How do you collaborate with other NGOs, agencies and/or corporations to accomplish SDG outcomes? Esperança’s model recognizes the importance of leveraging partners in the communities where we serve to help us identify and meet the needs of the community rather than imposing our own ideas and solutions. These partnerships allow us to scale up sustainable solutions that not only work, but also address the communities’ priority needs. 40 Years of Service: Global Volunteers’ Guiding Principle – We do whatever we are asked to do

…became the catalysts for the local people to do what they had already decided to do. On subsequent trips, the water pipe was laid, and the water was hooked up. Within a couple of years, most of the modest village homes had running water that came from pristine mountain springs. Global Volunteers’ fundamental objective is to help local people do what they have already decided to do. As in many development stories, the water did not solve all the community’s problems. The villagers soon discovered that running water needed to be drained, and this village had no sewer. Water ran out of their homes and into the streets, deteriorating the rutted roads. This was an unforeseen complication by the villagers, but they soon figured out a solution. With the help of other volunteer teams, they installed a community sewer system…. 40 Years of Service: Global Volunteers’ Philosophy of Service – Wage Peace and Promote Justice

…wherever they are, have the primary responsibility for the care of their families and communities, for the ethical use of their resources, and for realizing their full human potential. Global Volunteers believes that local people when functioning as a community, have the capacity to do whatever is necessary to become self-reliant. Equally important is the simple reality that it is not possible to merely give others what they need to become self-reliant. Global Volunteers believes that local people when functioning as a community, have the capacity to do whatever is necessary to become self-reliant. The Role of the Outsider . Global Volunteers was founded on the belief that outsiders (people who are not part of a local community,) can provide some catalytic assistance to encourage others toward self-reliance. Over the years, we have come to learn that the role of… (Search hits: 2 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Score: 418.69)

International Community Development Profile: Bitiana Kipingi Family

In this series, families in the Reaching Children’s Potential (RCP) Demonstration Program in Tanzania explain how their participation improves their lives. Global Volunteers’ RCP Program engages short-term volunteers to help parents deliver essential services improving health, eradicating hunger, and enhancing cognition – with the goal of eliminating child stunting in the Ukwega Ward and throughout Tanzania. Through RCP, families obtain the nutrition, health care, knowledge, technology, and encouragement needed to combat stunting, and to ensure their children can realize their full potential. The RCP Program is a child-focused, parent-driven, family-centered, and community-led comprehensive effort. It begins with pregnancy, and continues through the 18th birthday, with a focus on the first 1,000 days of life. Read Bitiana Kipingi’s interview about the RCP Program here. Medical Bridges and the Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, the United Nations developed 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a “shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future” to be achieve by 2030. The SDGs were preceded by the eight Millennium Development Goals, which directed the world’s governments and development institutions toward equality in meeting the world’s needs. Global Volunteers is committed to the vision and volition of the SDGs, and the MDGs before them, and measure our outcomes accordingly. In this blog series, we share the work of companion organizations toward achieving the SDGs. In this post, we describe how Medical Bridges has supplied medical equipment to NGOs serving impoverished and uninsured populations for over twenty years. Medical Bridges’ mission is to “bridge the healthcare gap worldwide by procuring and distributing medical equipment and supplies to underserved communities.”… (Search hits: 2 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. His commitment to education, support, and community involvement shows how one person’s efforts can spark change and inspire others to join the cause. By sharing testimonies like Denis’, we can motivate more people to volunteer and support the goal of recovery, using AA as a model. In this way, we’ll ultimately create stronger, healthier communities to support and advance the overall RCP goal of… (Search hits: 2 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Food distribution day at FAST Blackfeet typically sees 250 people come through to pick out food, which translates to around 1000 people benefitting from the food distributed at FAST Blackfeet each week. Jennifer Cooperman, a social worker from Massachusetts, found that though she works with people every day in her career in circumstances like the Blackfeet Community, she found that there were elements of life here that provided additional complications. “I did not truly appreciate the challenges of getting resources to people when public transportation doesn’t exist, and it can be hours to the nearest resources,” Jennifer commented. Bringing greater awareness to both the complications of life in this area, as well as the beautiful culture and community, are great benefits of volunteers serving with… (Search hits: 23 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments.
