Honoring the Wisdom of Community Leaders We recognize that the mere absence of war is not peace and peace without justice is no peace at all. As volunteers, we follow the lead of local people, who hold the wisdom of the community about how to approach their greatest societal challenges to peace, justice and development. Says Buddhi Man Shrestha, our Nepal community partner and Country Manager Assistant: “Peace in any community is… (Search hits: 21 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Legal Travel to Cuba Held His Imagination. Then the Cuban People Captured His Heart

…met my teammates, and we strolled down the graceful pedestrian Boulevard Independencia to the Community Center where we taught. We ate at our regular restaurants and got to know the waiters at the Hotel Rueda Bar by name and personality. An aerial view of Ciego de Ávila. Horse cart transportation is one option for volunteers in Ciego de Ávila. The numerous parks in Ciego de Ávila are popular meeting places for volunteers and local people. I discovered the true “riches” of Ciego de Ávila. There’s the sunshine – be careful what you wish for, this can be overwhelming. There’s time – for walking, for long conversations over meals, and drinks. The real treasure of course, is the people. The ones who greet us on the street or in church. And our students who come to the community center to get… (Search hits: 2 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Score: 567.32)

International Community Development Profile: Aglina Myumbo Family in Tanzania

…– Aglina Myumbo, RCP mom When you learned about hand-washing stations, what did you decide to do at home? What did you do to convince your family to practice good hygiene? After I learned about handwashing, the first thing I did at home was educate the whole family about what I had gained from the workshops. We started to practice washing our hands even before the hand-washing station was installed. I used to check on my children to make sure they washed their hands every time they came from the bathroom, before and after eating, and when they came inside after playing with their friends. I reinforced this practice with my children so much and this made them adopt the technology. Since we implemented this practice, I’ve never seen my children suffer from stomach problems as they did before. Three Generations Volunteer in Crete!

…well as with the kids. Having lots of fun was achieved almost effortlessly.  It was simply a part of each day’s activities with the kids.  “Mister, Mister” rang out almost continuously for all five days.  Almost all the kids were enthused to be there and learning as much as possible.  Regardless of what exercises or games we were playing, they really got into the spirit of finding the right answer.  We hope they got as much fun out of learning as we did – and at the end of the day, all goals were achieved to a great extent.” What are your fondest memories? “Seeing Megan on the last day, surrounded by hugging kids, was all the satisfaction that was possible to achieve.  Playing some basketball and soccer during the breaks was a lot of fun, as well as surprising… (Search hits: 1 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Access to Quality Healthcare in Rural Areas is Life-Changing for RCP Families

…280 babies, provided over 5000 vaccinations, and dispensed over 1 million pills from our pharmacy to RCP families and other community members. For most patients, this care is completely free of cost; others pay a small fee for medicines or laboratory tests. The services offered and number of patients served, however, do not tell the whole story of the Ipalamwa General Clinic’s impact. RCP families were surveyed before and after the opening of the clinic and were asked a series of questions about the healthcare they received. The results made our impact clear. Prior to the clinic opening, only 30% of families were always able to visit a medical facility when they needed to, and even less (22%) could afford the care. Now 67% of families can always visit a facility, and 74% can afford the care they receive.
