Village Families Promote New Dimensions of Mental Wellness in Tanzania

…Mlengela and Leonard Mkemwa encourage families to participate in mental health research. In general, community members are curious, but not greatly informed about mental wellness, Parent Group Leader Tumani Nyika says. “First of all, people are not aware of mental health issues. For some of us,” she continues, “when we attend workshops, we understand about stress, depression, alcohol misuse, and its impact, but if we don’t learn, some people take too much alcohol, and some end up with suicide. It’s clear we have to learn better ways to promote mental wellness.” Increased awareness about mental health, especially for pregnant moms, parents, and young girls and boys is an important next step, the parents suggest. So, they enthusiastically support research to help identify the causes of mental stress and impairment through examination, discussion and research. Returning to International Service as a Statement of Courage and Compassion

and salt. THE ROUTE FROM USA TO POLAND  Traveling during a pandemic isn’t a bad experience! Leo and Keith explained that travelers who carry the necessary documents; passport, proof of vaccination, and a negative Covid-19 test, enjoy a smooth traveling experience.  “There were no changes as long as you had your vaccine card, your negative Covid-19 test, and your passport,” Leo advised. “There is a hospital right near my house where I got my Covid-19 test and my vaccinations. Global Volunteers shared the steps I needed to follow, the paperwork needed to carry, and I prepared extra copies of everything. I had printed out copies for every airport, and it worked out very well,” he said. Leo compared his travel experience in Poland in 2019 with the one in 2021, “You walk through the airport just as though pre-Covid-19. Determined Greek Teacher Laments Loss of Volunteer Service During Pandemic

…native English speaker. My students, however, have an added advantage. Working with Global Volunteers gives my students the chance to practice their conversational English skills by speaking with volunteer teachers about Greek culture, history, and philosophy. It’s a win-win situation. It’s not surprising my students all do well and with stunning results!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIY4ZoODfeg&t=71s An example of the English Language oral examination. Volunteers are particularly useful in coaching the students and preparing them for their exams. For the younger students, they love to listen to the real-life English language, they giggle a lot, but by the end of the two weeks, they have more confidence and love to share the words they remember. As for me, I learn a lot from the volunteers, too, especially about their daily life in the U.S. I get the chance to share my culture and (Search hits: 8 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Care for Women and Heal the World

…the reason mothers and children at at the center of Global Volunteers’ RCP Program. Raising Up Communities, One Woman at a Time in Tanzania Women’s personal embrace of the RCP Program also enables Global Volunteers to help local people visualize optimal community-wide mental wellness in rural Tanzania. Mentally and physically fit families and children ultimately are the foundation for communities’ and nation’s advancement in all sectors. Raising up women to reach their full potential is a necessity in this and all communities’ development plans. Taking a decidedly personal approach in a January, 2023 qualitative study, Global Volunteers interviewed women along with village leaders and men about their mental health needs. Depression, recovery from alcohol abuse, healing trauma, resolution of family conflict, and protection from gender-based violence were top concerns. These responses are the basis for a qualitative study by Global… (Search hits: 6 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. …natural resources. Our programs have initiated joint activities for conflicting communities. In one area, leaders negotiated an agreement allowing for a cattle route to avoid conflicts when pastoralist cattle destroy farmers’ crops. In another area, our team brought together farmers, young pastoralists and community leaders to develop a conflict prevention plan to tackle violence that had resulted in hundreds of deaths, primarily stemming from destroyed farmlands and cattle killings.  Mercy Corps helped establish peace committee meetings in the Zongo community in Benue State, Nigeria. (Photo: Mercy Corps) After our program, we found that in places where we were helping farmers and pastoralists work together to better manage resources and to mediate conflicts before they became violent, there was a stronger perception of security and greater affinity for one another. 86% of households in participating communities reported decreased tensions, compared to… (Search hits: 5 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Meet Your Team Leader: Michael Harris

…what they want and need, not the other way around. Therefore, we are providing services to them that are truly needed and valued by the community. Also, the importance of volunteers participating in shared work experiences (working side by side with community members) significantly enriches the volunteer experience. Most of us can visit a community as a tourist, enjoy the sights, the sounds, the food, and a cursory exposure to the culture. However, the Global Volunteer experience enables you to enhance your knowledge and understanding of another community while providing meaningful service to communities that need assistance. It is an opportunity to directly engage with community members in a much more personal manner than as a tourist. The paired labor opportunities enable volunteers to spend quality time with community members and learn about what life is like within the community…. Psychiatrist Promotes Medical and Mental Health on Tanzania RCP Program

…of chronic diseases, long-term effects at the societal level, and mental health consequences. A prospective cohort study followed stunted children from poor neighborhoods in Kingston, Jamaica, and conducted follow-up surveys at 17-18 years old. The results demonstrated children who were stunted during infancy reported more anxiety, symptoms of depression, and lower self-esteem at 17-18 years old than those who were not stunted. Additionally, the study found that parents of stunted children tended to report more oppositional behaviors than parents of non stunted children. Many organizations, including the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), focus on nutritional intervention during the first 1000 days of life, a critical stage of neural, cognitive, and social development, to reduce the risk of stunting. One example of poor nutrition that has been shown to be particularly critical in neuro-development is iron deficiency. The History of the Reaching Children’s Potential Program from Anse-la-Raye to Ipalamwa

…was the intellectual property of the Caribbean organization, we renamed our effort. Throughout the community, this program was known simply as “RCP,” so we chose a name that continued to reflect that acronym. Hu Di, Global Volunteers, Director of International Operations responsible for Saint Lucia, proposed “Reaching Children’s Potential” (RCP). Parents in St. Lucia shared that their children’s interactions with volunteers helped their cognitive development, and they appreciated the training received in early childhood development from the volunteers. After three-plus years and engaging 490 short-term volunteers, we wondered what measurable contribution the volunteers were making. To answer this question, Global Volunteers commissioned a research team comprised of three Masters of Development Practice students from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota to assess how the use of foreign volunteers affected the delivery and outcomes of services… (Search hits: 19 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments.
