You see ways to personalize and target instructional needs and how effective particular strategies are. Was there any one individual who made a strong impression on you? David: My interactions with all the Cuban people were very positive and upbeat. They’re open – often exuberant – when talking about what they were accomplishing. But one moment comes to mind. There was a farmer in the community garden who offered me gloves when he saw me picking weeds with my bare hands. My Spanish was as weak as his English, but we communicated well enough. When Sharon and I were in the main public square on a Sunday, the same man came up and proudly introduced us to his wife… (Search hits: 3 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. 13 Volunteer Nursing Students Serve on 1st RCP Program in Peru

…Culturally-Competent Care As a researcher in public health nursing, cultural competence in the healthcare workforce, and enhancing students’ cultural competence, Professor Rachelle Larsen’s reasons for participating in a long-term community development project with nursing students run deep. “I understand the importance of global citizenship and inclusion. These two concepts are particularly important for nurses,” Larsen said.  “I hope to help students become more self-aware and inspire them to continue to strive to provide culturally competent care.” Professor Larsen chose Global Volunteers’ RCP Program in Peru to offer students the opportunity to learn about the public health reality of a Latin American country and gain skills working with diverse populations, all while providing their nursing skills to the local community. This service program was an exceptional opportunity for students to learn about healthcare realities in another part of the world and (Search hits: 2 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Volunteer’s Referrals Ripple Through Her Social Network

…in Peru? Volunteering at the school, which serves 1,400 kids from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade coming from financially challenged backgrounds, was an eye-opener for my daughter and me. It also brought back memories from my own school years in a developing country, Bangladesh. Sagrada Familia is a living example of resilience. With meager resources, daily life at school goes on to take on the challenges. I’ve taught Montessori to young kids at home, and the resources we had there would be a dream come true for the kids at Sagrada Familia. The founder’s vision of taking a giant step with this project, combined with the dedication of the staff, is a big leap of faith. “Sagrada Familia is a living example of resilience. …grateful for the opportunity to serve with him.” How did Wiktor assess the opportunity to assist Polish and Ukrainian children? “I think the local community gained the volunteers’ and students’ appreciation by looking at their hospitality and the hard work they put in to give them a warm welcome. English has helped Ukrainian refugees communicate with others and allowed them to make new friends.” He said in all, participating in the summer camps “was the best experience of my life.” Inspired by Wiktor’s example, another Polish student, Weronica, offered her assistance at the summer camps as a translator’s assistant. She said working for two months with the English-speaking volunteers helped her overcome her hesitancy to speak the language. https://vimeo.com/749743538 Weronica and Wiktor worked together to help Ukrainian and Polish children feel comfortable with the volunteers – and to share the… (Search hits: 2 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Motherless Children Teach this Volunteer a Lesson in Love

…her hand on my shoulder as I grew up. But not everyone is afforded the luxury of a mother’s supportive smile, purposeful discipline, and gentle molding. Many children walk through life without a mother’s footsteps beside theirs. I met hundreds of such children during my Global Volunteers service program in Peru. https://vimeo.com/334997386 Our team of volunteers was composed of people from across the nation; from New York to Minnesota to California. On weekday mornings, lively conversation filled the large van that took us to Sagrada Familia (Sacred Family), the community project where Global Volunteers serves. Some mornings, if I was tired, I would turn my head, rest my cheek on the seat, and stare out the window into Ventanilla, one of Lima’s poorest districts. Rolling pale grey hills that extended to the horizon were punctuated by small colorful houses. I explained the types of activities that we liked to do in our free time and also allowed me to use photos that I had on hand. The famous Cross-the- bridge Rice Noodles in Kunming -delicious! Building Local Capacity in Peru

Global Volunteers’ goal is to support and fortify community leaders’ vision for self-sufficiency – ultimately to enable children and families to reach their full potential. An essential step towards this vision is building local capacity. In this interview as the fourth post in the series, Peru Country Manager Daniel Salazar shares how Peruvians are building their local capacity with the help of volunteers. Who are Global Volunteers’ community partners in Peru and what kinds of projects do they work on for the wellbeing of their community?  In Peru we have two community partners: Sagrada Familia Children’s Community in Ventanilla and La Molina Agrarian University Language Center in La Molina in Lima.   Sagrada Familia is a private children’s home that works very hard to provide food, clothes, medicine, and education for at-risk children from all over Peru.
