December 2009: New Volunteer Coordinators & More!!

…food, and engaging speakers from the organization, the local community, and the international community. Highlights also included an award presentation to Global Volunteers from our host community in Poland and the presentation of the 2009 Vision Award Recipient to Bishop Mdegella of Tanzania. And now, as staff return to their daily routines, country managers prepare for their next teams and new VCs continue to learn more each day about the organization, the work, and the amazing opportunity to help others “wage peace through service” and better humanity for years to come. It is a privilege to be a part of this organization, and I know I speak for all new staff when I say I look forward to enhancing the work of Global Volunteers by enabling positive change one person at a time. People ask why I spend my annual vacation time volunteering abroad

“Challenge is not a curse or a punishment, but an opportunity to shine. If life were easy all the time, we would not deepen in love, compassion, and wisdom, or learn how to sink a pipeline into the well of true strength within us. Often we do not know how powerful we are until we are faced with a challenge that draws forth our greatness.” -Alan Cohen People ask why I spend my annual vacation time volunteering abroad. The secret truth is that in helping people to build better lives through self-reliance, whether it’s teaching English/math/computer technology, loving orphans, or constructing playgrounds, one develops equally in return through the local community’s demonstration of genuine kindness, enduring strength, and motivated spirit despite their lack of materialistic conveniences and pleasures. Global Volunteers summarizes the benefit well in their Philosophy of Service: “By… (Search hits: 1 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Partners in Development: A Message from Global Volunteers’ CEO Bud Philbrook

…improvements can be measured. The most successful efforts have been at the local community level where local leaders are in charge and outsiders provide appropriate catalytic assistance. That is what Global Volunteers strives to do. We offer volunteers to work under the direction of local leaders on community-based projects that the community determines are important to its long-term human and economic development. How can anyone, therefore, individually make a significant difference in three weeks? Most people can’t. However, Global Volunteers sends multiple teams of volunteers to each community every year, year after year. Every volunteer becomes a vital link in a long chain of volunteers. For the local children, each volunteer makes a world of difference because without all the volunteers who came before and after, their lives would be very different. We know this is the case because we’ve… (Search hits: 1 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Score: 203.22)

Fundraise Your Fee and Serve This Year!

…perfect fit. I found out about the program through a girl at my school who had done a trip to Brazil with her mother a few years ago. The fact that Global Volunteers provided me with the means to create a fundraising page was very helpful. It was perfect for me to fundraise through. Global Volunteers is the only volunteer program I found that allowed you to fully fundraise all of your costs and helped you in doing so. All other programs were much more expensive and more of a volunteer ‘vacation’ rather than a strictly volunteer trip. This has been a wonderful, fulfilling memory for me. I encourage you to do it. -Meagan Minott Call or email us to learn how you can establish your own fundraising page on our website and for examples from other successful fundraisers. http://www.globalvolunteers.org… (Search hits: 1 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Global Volunteers established community partnerships with seven Nepalese organizations in 2018. Founded in 1984, Global Volunteers is a pioneer in engaging short-term volunteers in community-based, long-term comprehensive development projects worldwide, establishing hundreds of long-term development partnerships with community organizations in 36 countries on six continents over the past three decades. “A good education can change anyone. A good teacher can change everything” -Anonymous (etched on a wall at St. Joseph’s School, Kathmandu, Nepal) Anne said English is seen as the language of “commerce and opportunity.” She said helping local leaders advance their vision for self-sufficiency was her primary motivation for serving. “The team (of volunteers) worked together to address… (Search hits: 1 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. In his speech, Governor Karol Tchórzewski thanked Global Volunteers and the some 3,000 volunteers who have served in Siedlce county since 1990, mentioning, “I believe that even more important than the tangible results of Global Volunteers’ work in Poland is the number of students or the benefits of other forms of assistance — the friendships, the openness, the selflessness, the optimism. Each of the students, thanks to contact with volunteers, has become a different person — more open, more spontaneous, better.” Global Volunteers’ 30th Anniversary team (Leo Pyzynski (second from left), Duane Besso, Dawn Marquez, Joyce Burr, and Penny Louise Flavin) attends the gala along with community members. Opening To New Experiences – Volunteering In Cuba

…of my first day is Cuba is what I will be sharing… my thoughts, feelings, judgments. I KNOW that I can easily focus on the details (Varying room temperature, food surprises, loud noises at 3 am, lukewarm coffee, unrelenting heat) or I can experience the “Gestalt” (or, the whole) of this time here. So I am choosing to stay open and experience everything in an ACCEPTING WAY. My open experiences today are: Approaching each person who makes eye contact with a smile and a “buen dia” Appreciating interesting things about every person on the team Embracing the numerous new things I am learning about Cuba Absorbing the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of Cuba So, with an open heart and willingness to approach, appreciate, embrace and absorb each experience, I say “Hola Cuba! Estoy tan feliz estar aqui !” -Marion… (Search hits: 3 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Score: 195.98)

My life as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, educator, pastor, advocate, and friend has been one of constantly honing my skills, molding my temperament, nourishing relationships, and fueling my passion for making this world a better place for everyone.
