…painted. Community member’s house after a fresh coat of paint. Meanwhile, other volunteers worked at the De La Salle Catholic School and associated Thrift Store. Several teams served the Commodity Center, a food resource center supported both by the Tribe and USDA, and Global Volunteers partner, to ensure that critical food needs are met.  Throughout the summer, the Planning Department requested volunteers to assist with building improvements and community beautification projects.   Teams have found great fulfillment in being able to engage more directly with the community through a collaboration with one of our Community Hosts, Blackfeet Manpower. This joint program enables Global Volunteers team members to work on projects that community members can apply for help with. These projects include things like yard work, minor household repairs, and painting. This has enabled team members to be able to engage with… (Search hits: 15 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Score: 269.69)

Peruvian Psychologist and Children’s Home Director Claims Volunteers are “Essential”

…world of solidarity. Here we don’t even have sponsorship programs.” Do you think short-term volunteers damage children when they stay only a short time and then go home?  “No. For us as a community, it is normal to have volunteers coming and going and the children understand that well. Children here have no bonding issues with short-term volunteers. They obviously have different levels of attachment, but they understand that volunteers are coming to visit just like an aunt or uncle may come to visit for a short time. What matters is that we keep what they teach us. Every person who comes here is an example for us, even if they stay for a little bit. Time is not a factor that leans the scale negatively. It would be great if they could stay and help us for a year…. (Search hits: 3 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Score: 263.09)

Then we did the name game plus one fact; students gave their name and told something about themselves, e.g., “My name is Filip and I like to dance”. “Find Someone Who…” was a good way for me to get to know students. For example, “Find someone who has visited another country” was one of the questions. Students went around the room and asked other students and me to find people who did twenty activities. Students reported back and I did a follow up, e.g., “You said you liked snakes. Would you like to have a pet snake?” Jim uses word games and and active lessons for teaching conversational English to Polish students. Word association exercises were also successful. For example, the teacher says hot. Then the next student could say cold. Drawing on their own experiences and compassion, volunteers can make a significant difference in the lives of youth in as little as one or two weeks. Read on to learn how volunteers of diverse backgrounds and life experiences nurture and mentor children of diverse circumstances. In a perfect world, all children are cared for by loving parents who provide an excellent education, a secure home life and guidance throughout their formative years. But this ideal scenario is not the norm in developing countries, where many parents struggle to feed their families and have little time left for nurturing and psycho-social support. As word spread about Sagrada Familia’s success educating displaced and abandoned children, government services began referring children to the community. As demand grew, Miguel converted living quarters into classrooms. “Miguel decided to build a school for the children. But he had no resources. Slowly, they were able to build a few classrooms for elementary school, then high school, and lastly Pre-K.” It wasn’t an optimal solution, so Miguel turned to funders inside and outside the country to help. When given the opportunity, Global Volunteers alumni contributed for the construction of three Pre-K classrooms in 2019. “Working alongside the community, volunteers transformed an area full of rubble and rusted vehicles… (Search hits: 3 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments.
