…new things and learn more how to solve problems facing children and moms, rather than rely on traditional ways of child rearing. What are some of the cultural beliefs about pregnancy you grew up with? We were taught always to follow all our cultural beliefs and values in the society. Taboos and faith are very strong. For example, a pregnant women cannot stand when drinking water or sit in front of the door, or it will result in complications during delivery. It is taboo after delivery not to eat green vegetables because it will create stomach upset. That’s just a few examples of taboos. Our ancestors told people different ways. Nowadays, just a few of them maintain and keep these practices. What do you hope to gain by participating in the RCP Program? The Language of Love

…are for hugging, holding, and comforting.” “Do this,” he whispered, “and they may well follow the example.” Volunteers Mark, Bruce, Maggie, and Michael with Teacher Hugo and 6th grade students Mark and Michael with Liz, a high school English teacher at Sagrada Familia “The language of love is done with your eyes, your hands, and your smile.” – Miguel Rodríguez, founder of Sagrada Familia This simple statement carried weight. These children had communicated love, respect, and warmth to me and each other without a word being spoken. These emotions, so hard to convey, did not need translation at all. And the catalyst for this? One person with the belief that being an example can change others. “These children had communicated love, respect, and warmth to me and each other without a word being spoken.” – Mark Bierbaum For the remainder… (Search hits: 3 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. International Confederation of Midwives and the Sustainable Development Goals

…big pile of hard worker bees without much understanding of our specific field of work,” she explained.  “But midwifery is special because everyone is born. So everyone experiences this, and in that way, we touch and write the start of life.” She said the term “midwife” is an Anglo-Saxon term meaning “with woman,” and aptly describes the role that women have long assumed as birth companions. Throughout history and across cultures, women have traditionally provided direct care and support during childbirth. “And so, it’s a beautiful word,” she smiled. Midwives are recognized by their governments or communities as skilled professionals who care for women, their babies and the wider community before, during and after pregnancy and birth. In most societies, midwives often serve additional roles as community leaders, and as specialists in primary health care and well-woman care. Global Volunteers Nepal Inaugural Team Reports on Teaching in Kathmandu

…to join them on state. Who knew we had so many Dancing Queens among us!” Thursday- “A day of Learning” Each day in Nepal has brought many memorable moments as our bonds with one another build, and our volunteer work experiences continue to unfold. In fact, today was the first morning I hadn’t woken up to the sounds of honking horns and looking out of the window. The streets were empty because of the strike. During the morning, our Team Leader Stephen talked about the Caste System in Indian and applications to Nepal. Steven is a scholar in his knowledge of this very complex topic. All the time Stephen was teaching us, you could feel the compassion for the people of his homeland, hear the clarity in his words as he surrounded facts with anecdotes. Stephen provided some heartbreaking facts… (Search hits: 3 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Score: 261.45)

A Day Teaching English in Poland

…an exercise of going to the grocery store with seven 13 year old boys. It covered how you would decide what to buy, what kinds of food are expensive and those which are cheaper, how to ask a friend if they needed anything at the store, and learning definitions of various types of products and packaging. We took turns with everyone having a chance to ask the questions or answer one. I get help from one or two of the students with more knowledge of English who will translate my directions into Polish if there are questions from someone who doesn’t understand. I have worked with this group 3 times and there is good rapport with them. The morning was finished with another group of kindergarten children who were taught by Ms. Magda. We sang songs again and the children… (Search hits: 3 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Score: 261.45)

Montana Volunteer Describes a Week of Discovery Working with the Blackfeet

…of everyday life simply fell away. This feeling of being truly free, profound and all-encompassing, was something I’d never experienced before. I’ve struggled for months with how to describe it to others. A new show, 1883, summed it up perfectly, “Freedom is riding wild over the untamed land with no notion that any moment exists beyond the one you are living.” Jessica describes being on a strong, beautiful animal with nothing but open space as far as the eye could see as an almost surreal experience. “Freedom is riding wild over the untamed land with no notion that any moment exists beyond the one you are living.” – Fictional Character, Elsa Dutton, on Paramount+ Series,1883 I knew this trip would be life changing. Girls’ Contribution to the World – Nurturers, Laborers, Leaders, Our Future

Girls study, perform domestic chores, work on farms and in stores, carry on traditions, care for elders and siblings, and prepare themselves to take on the responsibilities of adulthood. They’re a fundamental source of transformational change for gender equality, and half of the future resource to the global society and economy.  The world over, as more public, non-profit and private interventions are intentionally designed with and for adolescent girls and young women – one in eight people in the world – the persistent gender gaps in education, learning and economic participation are closing. But change comes slowly. “When girls are supported to realize their human rights, they can reach their potential and create a better world for themselves, their communities and societies,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl Child,… (Search hits: 2 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments.
