Motivated Couple Volunteering Worldwide Reflects on Impact of Service

Global Volunteers Bill and Barb Chase have served together in Ecuador, Tanzania, Montana, West Virginia, St. Lucia and Costa Rica since 2006. This couple volunteering worldwide exemplifies the opportunities to discover the world – and each other – together through service. Bill, a retired physician/surgeon, and Barb, a retired teacher, are loved and respected by their team leaders, teammates and the local people, both young and old. Bill writes: “All of my Global Volunteer projects have been “labor” projects in one way or another. In Tanzania, I worked with the local physician and then covered for him while he was away for a week. In West Virginia, I worked with “at risk” youth helping them winterize houses for poor individuals. In Montana, I worked with the grounds crew of the Blackfeet Community College. In Ecuador, I did maintenance work for… (Search hits: 6 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Score: 1359.34)

The Ripple Effect: Alumna’s “Model of Giving” Inspires Others to Serve

…to enhance their lives.”   Crissey was surprised by the conditions at her work sites. “I expected I’d be in areas of obvious and abject poverty, similar to what I had experienced in Costa Rica and Peru. Instead I saw crowded roadways with recent-model cars, well-kept homes, and well-stocked grocery, pharmacy, and convenience stores.” She’s aware of plans to widen the scope of Global Volunteers’ reach in the region – where volunteers will work one-on-one with children and families in impoverished areas. To better understand the struggles of “average people,” Crissey and her teammates participated in discussions with their Puerto Rican team leader, Yanira (Yani) Ocasio and her husband Luis. “We learned about the country’s poverty and sub-par living conditions in our orientation session,” she offered. “For instance, the 40 percent unemployment rate and $15K average annual income were statistics which were… (Search hits: 6 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. International Service in High School Curricula

…race or ethnicity, I learned how to problem-solve and provide care with minimal resources, how to communicate cross-culturally using non-verbal cues due to language barriers, and created lifelong bonds with the three other volunteers that the volunteer abroad program connected me with, all from diverse walks of life. Professionally, I better understood how medical care is provided in marginalized settings, realized the importance of building local capacity, and confirmed my interest in global health, a realization that has shaped my life ever since. It’s safe for me to say that the monetary investment that I made in that two-week trip resulted in many returns for me, and that volunteering abroad has been one of the best decisions that I have made in my life. High School Volunteering Expands Students’ Education and Worldview

…make an impact while traveling. These efforts have taken me on short-term trips to volunteer in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, study in Argentina and South Korea, and recently to work for one year in Uganda. My passion for global health and international development was initiated by those two weeks in Ghana, which shaped my worldview and my life’s purpose to become a physician in global health. With my own personal experience, I am a wholehearted believer of the endless benefits of global exposure for young students, with the belief that the earlier the exposure, the better. This is why I believe high school volunteering is pivotal in students’ education. For those two weeks, I was immersed in and gained an appreciation for another culture, learned about international service and global health, made long-lasting connections that would accelerate my career later in life, and learned a wealth of… (Search hits: 4 in body, 0 in title, %category% in categories, 0 in tags, %taxonomy% in other taxonomies, 0 in comments. Transgender Woman Shares Advice for Service Travel

…to learn new experiences and cultures, and to promote visibility for my TGD community. While I prefer labor-type work such as gardening and landscaping, I’ve had a good experience practicing English with college students and other adults in Cuba. This year, I will be going back to Cuba – this time to the town of Ciego de Avila – and expect to participate in gardening work and English conversation with the local people. I will also be joining the new program in Puerto Rico – again doing light labor, providing psycho-social support and possibly helping with grant writing. Linda with students in Costa Rica. Other of many “best moments” on my trips include: In Costa Rica, I was asked to present a class on Transgender 101 to a group of 12th graders as well as my fellow volunteers. 13 Volunteer Nursing Students Serve on 1st RCP Program in Peru

Nursing students from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University in Minnesota contributed immensely to Global Volunteers’ First Reaching Children’s Potential (RCP) Program in Peru. The Peru RCP Program, a replica of Global Volunteers’ Tanzania RCP Program, officially launched in the summer of 2022. Global Volunteers’ staff and community leaders laid the groundwork for volunteers to be engaged in the program beginning that fall. In November 2022, thirteen nursing students eagerly and effectively put their skills and knowledge to use, alongside their professor, in Ventanilla, north of Lima. During their two-week service-learning program, the student volunteers worked with and learned from and about the local people, and absorbed the public health reality of Ventanilla. Read on for details about this student group’s remarkable experience and the first RCP team to serve in South America.
