Global Volunteers Volunteer Abroad Scholarship

Global Volunteers occasionally offers college scholarships for creative high school volunteer abroad recruiting strategies. Winners are profiled on Global Volunteers’ blog and have an opportunity to earn volunteer abroad credits for a Global Volunteers’ service program.  Check back here occasionally for status of this opportunity.

  • Scholarship is currently closed.
  • The winners will be notified by e-mail three weeks after the deadline.
  • Scholarship entries will be reviewed by a team of judges at Global Volunteers.
  • Scholarships will be awarded based on the sole discretion of Global Volunteers.
  • Each scholarship will be paid out in one co-payable check of USD500 to each winner, and the designated college or university.  All checks will be mailed to the named college or university.

Scholarship Entry Requirements

Your entry must consist of a minimum 1,000 and a maximum of 2,500 words in the form of a strategy for motivating high school students and their teacher to volunteer abroad. Proper grammar, punctuation and citations are required.  Points are awarded for understanding and insight into Global Volunteers programs.

Questions that should be answered include:

  • How can high school volunteers benefit from short-term (1-3 weeks) international service experiences?
  • What opportunities exist to integrate volunteering abroad into the school’s curriculum?
  • How can the broader community support international service by high school students?
  • What are some effective ways to motivate high school students to volunteer abroad?

Include specific promotional tactics for engaging students in school-based recruiting.

Student Eligibility Requirements

U.S. or Canadian students who meet one of the following 3 criteria are eligible to enter:

  1. Currently a high school junior or senior in good standing;
  2. Have been accepted at an accredited college or university;
  3. Are enrolled in a college or university located in the United States or Canada.

Global Volunteers employees and their immediate family members are ineligible for this scholarship.  Global Volunteers does not discriminate based upon race, religion, creed, national origin, marital status, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age or color.

How to Enter

  • Email your entry in Microsoft Word, PDF or plain text form to
  • Include your name, phone number, email and mailing address. Your contact information will will not be shared or sold.
  • Include the name of the college and/or university and the mailing address of the financial aid office that you are presently attending or that you’ll be attending after high school.
  • Please attach a headshot photo of yourself in .JPG or .PNG format that is at least 300 pixels wide.

If we don’t receive complete information by the deadline, your entry may be disqualified.
