School and Household Gardens

School and household gardens offer simple, yet effective remedies to alleviate hunger, improve food security and reduce micro-nutrient deficiencies. Further, they’re relevant tools of applied learning – demonstrating appropriate farming technology and skills. This is important, because agriculture is foundational to economic growth in developing countries.

At each partner school, children’s home and orphanage, one local staff person manages earthbox container gardens supplied by Global Volunteers. You’re a catalyst for multiplying the number of “earthbox families” throughout the community. You encourage and support the local garden champion, and inspire parents to start their own household gardens. You plant, replant, maintain and harvest produce and demonstrate use and maintenance of the earthboxes. Your agriculture, gardening, science, nutrition, and home economics knowledge is particularly helpful. Read more about volunteer service on community projects.
