54 Minute Flight From Home
As I live in Florida, I feel as if I my 2013 journey to Cuba with Global Volunteers was an homage to my Cuban American friends and colleagues.
Cuba is beautiful, deteriorating, and complex. The people are warm and welcoming. Everyone dances, sings, and/or plays instruments. The old are survivors and resourceful. The young are hungry and inventive. Everything feels poised for change. The direction, however, is unknown as it is hard to identify where the truth really lies.
We have a lot to learn from the Cubans. There is no better way to learn than working alongside one another. A volunteer opportunity in Cuba will crack open the door to long-held mysteries. And in the end, we will find common ground through sharing and learning.
