Conversational English, Reaching Children's Potential Tanzania

“Iringa Town” is New Service Destination for 2016 Tanzania Volunteers

Over 30 years,  team members have come to know the sights, sounds and energy of Iringa – the small economic center and transportation hub which has been Global Volunteers’ overnight stop on the way to our partner communities.  But, visits have been limited to a comforting meal at the end of the day’s travel, a cozy bedroom and a quick shopping trip at the market.  Now, this “stop-over” is the journey’s end!  During the rebuilding of the Pommern mission house this summer and fall, volunteers will settle into Iringa and work with local people on fulfilling service projects – some familiar, some new.  This is an exciting opportunity for alumni and new Tanzania volunteers alike to fully explore this friendly outpost,  and learn about urban Tanzanian culture through service.

IRINGA COMMUNITY WORK PROJECTS

Our community partners are The Huruma (“Compassion” in Swahili) Children’s Home and The University of Iringa.

TAN1107A1-Anshea-Fenner-from-class-with-Mlandege-kindergaten-in-Iringa.The Children’s Home cares for and educates 68 girls and boys ages 3 to 13.  You can teach them conversational English, tutor them in math, play games and sports, and offer psycho-social support in other ways.  If you enjoy domestic assignments, the cooking and caregiving staffs need help preparing meals and feeding and minding the youngest children.  If you’re “handy, ” you can help out with light labor projects as well.

At Iringa University,  you’re needed to help teach classes and  present lectures on subjects including Information Technology, Conversational English, Mathematics, History, Psychology, and Business Studies to classes of the student body of 3, 000.  You can also assist in the school library.

In July 2016, healthcare volunteers will also facilitate training for rural medical aides from the surrounding villages under the direction of the leadership of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT).  The ELCT First Aid provider at the District’s educational institutions is very interested to learn from our volunteers about both practical skills and theoretical knowledge related to providing First Aid to students and staff at their various schools and other facilities.

IRINGA LODGING

Iringa-Lutheran-CentreYour home base is the Lutheran Center, serving as our in-transit accommodations on previous programs.  This comfortable guest house has private bathrooms in every room, and give single rooms available at no additional charge on a first-come, first-served basis.
