Summer of Conversational English in a picturesque, mountainous village in Crete!
Since the summer of 2005, Global Volunteers has partnered with the Municipality of Malevizi to conduct the English Language Summer School, focusing on basic conversational English, pronunciation, and motivation for learning for elementary school students. Starting in June 2024 the summer school will be hosted at the Elementary School of Krousonas, in the village of Krousonas nestled high in the mountains of Crete. Volunteers will dedicate their mornings to teaching local village children amidst the fresh mountain air of Krousonas. In the evenings and on the weekend, they will have free time to visit the local sites or have a cool dip in the Aegean Sea, 50 meters from our accommodation at Anna’s Studios.
Global Volunteers has been invited by a new community partner in Crete, the Elementary School of Krousonas, to teach conversational English to students aged 6-12. The newly appointed headmaster, Zacharias Kougoumtzis, a dedicated supporter of Global Volunteers for many years, in a recent meeting with CEO Bud Philbrook and Greece Country Manager Sam Pinakoulaki, warmly invited Global Volunteers to host the annual English summer school at his school in the picturesque village of Krousonas. The school was established in 1957 and is housed in a public building with 6 classrooms, two offices, and a large corridor where the lending library operates, including books of contemporary children’s literature. In the large schoolyard, there are two modular classrooms.
The headmaster asked us to recruit volunteers to teach conversational English and involve the students in other engaging activities, including sports, arts and crafts, and theater. Many of the younger children at this school have had very little previous English instruction, and the older children are primarily beginners. The goal is to help students with their conversational skills and pronunciation and to motivate them to learn English. Working independently of local teachers, volunteers aim to enhance students’ language skills. Global Volunteers provides materials and activity ideas, fostering learning through formal classes and informal engagements like games, craft projects, and outdoor activities, making a meaningful impact on local children, including those from low-income families.
The Importance of Conversational English for Children in Crete
Within the European Union, a diverse array of languages are spoken, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of the continent. English is introduced as a subject from the very first grade, emphasizing the foundational nature of this skill. For those seeking a deeper understanding and certification in English proficiency, private English schools cater to children as young as eight, paving the way for a comprehensive linguistic journey. Sam stresses the necessity of a basic grasp of the English language for every individual in Greece, citing the country’s reliance on tourism as a major economic driver.

In villages, like Krousonas, where educational resources may be limited, the presence of dedicated volunteers becomes a beacon of opportunity for the local community. By offering their time and expertise, these volunteers bridge the gap between linguistic aspirations and accessible education, empowering residents with the ability to communicate effectively in English. In addition to enhancing language skills, these volunteers also bring cultural exchange and a sense of global connectivity to these remote corners of Crete. The village of Krousonas
The village of Krousonas, situated 21 km southwest of Heraklion at an altitude of 460 meters, is an integral part of the Municipality of Malevizi. Home to a population of 2,855 residents, Krousonas is surrounded by neighboring villages like Sarchos, Kitharida, Korfi, and Loutraki, enveloped mainly by vineyards and olive groves, reflecting the primary focus of its inhabitants on agriculture and animal husbandry. This region has witnessed a burgeoning trend in agritourism. In the settlement, several traditional taverns are still operating, where you can taste delicious delicacies of mountainous Crete, made from pure products such as meats and dairy, vegetables, fruits, and renowned wine. The village itself is built amphitheatrically on the hills of Plagia, Koupous, and Levadiotis. At the foothills of Mount Gournos lies the communal monastery of Agia Eirini, while at an altitude of 920 meters, the plateau known as Livadi hosts numerous orchards, predominantly featuring pear and apple trees.
The existence of Krousonas is confirmed by various historical records, some dating back at least seven hundred years. The village’s name is attributed to a prevailing version, aligning with local tradition, indicating that the name Krousonas existed as an ancient toponym. According to this tradition, ancient inhabitants, the Kouretes, engaged in competitions in the region. During these contests, the intense clashes (strikes) of weapons and shields led to the name Krousonas, meaning the place of clashes. Another version suggests that Krousonas is a place frequented by corsairs.
The excellent road network and its location favor easy access, making Krousonas an attractive destination for those seeking a short but rich-in experiences getaway. Picturesque settlements, monasteries, and churches with a rich history and cultural interest appeal to history and culture enthusiasts, while charming taverns cater to those whose preferences lie in tastes and gastronomy. Volunteering to teach conversational English in a village like Krousonas, becomes a crucial endeavor.
