Online Gift Catalog Extends Support to Those Who Need it Most
Global Volunteers launched its first online “store” of donation options in time for holiday giving – and beyond. Donors select gifts in honor of loved ones, who receive a greeting card describing the purpose of the donation in their name. Every purchase of needed supplies and services greatly improves the lives of children and their families through Global Volunteers’ ongoing programs.
The Global Volunteers Gift Catalog is a complementary channel for the organization’s growing capacity to supply critical resources to partner communities. Now, while volunteers are grounded by the pandemic, they can still help ensure that support will continue in 2021.
Gift options include mosquito nets, health exams, healthy meals and home visits, hand-washing stations, safe stoves and garden boxes as well as prenatal care, chicken coops and ambulance shares. Selections match the honoree’s personality and interests as well as the gift-giver’s budget. Credit card purchases are processed online in minutes.
Give Health and Nutrition
The World Health Organization asserts that adequate nutrition is most critical in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life. Undernourishment before and after birth threatens her/his physical growth, brain development, and lifelong health.
Global Volunteers provides families and students fortified packaged meals and micro-nutrient supplements through the RCP Program. Donated by Rise Against Hunger, these meals offer pregnant women, new moms, babies, toddlers, and students two nutritious meals a day. The meals include the recommended daily nutrients (i.e., folate, iron, iodine, zinc, niacin, selenium, manganese, vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, and E), all of which reduce maternal morbidity and mortality, and boosts fetal growth and development. Give two nutritious pre-packaged meals a day to a mom and her babe and regular home visits conducted by a trained staff caregiver.
Considering all medical interventions combined, washing hands with soap and water remains the most effective way to prevent infectious disease from spreading, and is a cornerstone of our development efforts in Tanzania’s Reaching Children’s Potential (RCP) Demonstration Program. Parents say their family’s health greatly improved after they adopted proper hand-washing habits and technology at their homes. You can give a family a new household hand-washing station and all the needed supplies for one year, providing them the essential ability to keep their hands clean and diseases at bay.
Give Education
Many children in our partner communities don’t receive adequate early childhood education. You can help toddlers prepare for primary school and build a foundation for lifelong learning by purchasing reading and writing supplies for a community nursery, daycare center or preschool. Children are mentored in meaningful service projects using donated materials through your generosity.
And, by purchasing the necessary English teaching materials for primary and secondary school classrooms such as flashcards and vocabulary games, you can help students prepare for college and successful careers.
Throughout the world, far fewer girls than boys attend school, especially high school and college. By giving gifts from the Global Volunteers gift catalog, you can help turn this around in our partner communities. When girls are educated, the impact on their community and country is immeasurable. An educated girl is more likely to avoid early marriage, delay childbirth, have fewer children, become a leader in her community, and support her family.
Give a Better Future
Needs are great around the world, especially during the pandemic. You can purchase a safe stove, chicken coops, earthboxes, maternal health care and safe childbirth in the names of those you love. And, to ensure Global Volunteers programs continue to enable a steady stream of volunteers to work hand-in-hand with mothers, teachers, nurses, caregivers and local leaders, you can designate your gift for where the need is the greatest.
