Conversational English, News and Updates China

Volunteer in China: Teach English and Experience Cultural Exchange

It is now more important than ever to renew people-to-people connections with the Chinese people. The US and Chinese governments need to know that the people of our countries respect each other and that we all want to live together in peace. There is no better way to convey that message than by volunteering to help Chinese students improve their skills speaking and listening to the international language of commerce, technology, and opportunity. Establishing friendships, telling stories, and sharing our love for our respective countries will speak volumes to both governments.

An Invitation to Volunteer in Xi’an

We’ve been asked to teach conversational English to college students at Xijing University in the southern suburbs of Xi’an. The primary objective is to encourage the students to speak English while listening to native English speakers. Some volunteers may also offer lectures on topics within their area of expertise, participate in other academic/professional exchange activities, or teach conversational English at the primary or junior middle schools affiliated with Xijing University.

Xi’an is more than just a city—it’s a living testament to China’s ancient history. Known as the starting point of the Silk Road, Xi’an is home to some of the country’s most iconic historical sites, such as the Terracotta Warriors and the ancient city walls. But beyond its rich past, Xi’an is a thriving, modern university town where young minds are eager to learn and connect with the world.

In recent years, China has increasingly placed an emphasis on improving English proficiency, recognizing its importance as a global language for business, education, and international communication. English skills are no longer just a luxury—they are seen as essential for success. This is where you come in. By volunteering in Xi’an, you will help students not only improve their language skills but also deepen their understanding of global cultures, paving the way for more meaningful international connections.

And this year, your opportunity to contribute is even more significant. Any foreign Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) must be registered to work in China. Global Volunteers is one of only four US NGOs officially registered in Shaanxi province. However, because we have not sent volunteers to China for over five years, the government has advised that our registration will expire at the end of 2025 unless we renew the program in China this year. Consequently, these two service programs are vitally important. With our May and October programs being the first service programs to China since 2020, the need for volunteers to help rebuild cultural exchanges is paramount. Students and communities are eager for the return of foreign volunteers who offer not just language skills, but also the chance to engage with new ideas, perspectives, and experiences.

Teach Conversational English at Xijing University, China

As a volunteer, your role will center on teaching conversational English to university students at Xijing University, a renowned institution with a diverse student body. But teaching English isn’t just about grammar or vocabulary; it’s about sparking curiosity, fostering communication, and sharing insights into your own culture.

Each day will be a blend of classroom time and creative lessons. You’ll engage with students through activities like debates, discussions, role-plays, games, and real-world scenarios—all designed to make English feel natural and practical. Whether you’re helping a student fine-tune their accent or guiding them through their first conversation in English, you’ll be helping them to succeed in a world that increasingly demands strong language skills.

But your impact doesn’t stop there. Depending on your background and profession, you might also have the chance to:

  • Tutor primary or junior middle school students: Many students in Xi’an struggle with English at an early  age , and your role as a tutor will directly help them build a solid foundation.
  • Give guest lectures on topics you are passionate about, whether they’re related to your field of expertise or your personal experiences. These lectures open doors for academic exchange and allow you to share valuable knowledge that goes beyond language.
  • Participate in cultural exchanges: You’ll be invited to share your stories, traditions, and customs, while also learning about Chinese culture through interactions with students and faculty members.

Your volunteer experience in Xi’an will be dynamic and deeply personal. As you teach, you will engage with your students in ways that go beyond lessons—they’ll teach you as much about China as you’ll teach them about your world.

Explore the Rich Culture of Xi’an

Teaching English is not only about the classroom—it’s also about experiencing the local culture and creating connections that last a lifetime. When you volunteer in Xi’an, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the city’s many historical landmarks. One of the most famous is the Terracotta Army, a breathtaking collection of life-sized statues that date back to the Qin Dynasty. Whether you’re wandering through ancient temples or bustling markets, Xi’an is a city that captivates all your senses. As a volunteer, you will have the chance to witness this extraordinary piece of China’s history firsthand.

The variety and quantity of food in China are legendary. You’ll most often be served stir-fried dishes of vegetables and meat, sweet & sour pork, Chinese dumplings, and fried rice. Xi’an offers an incredible culinary scene, with dishes like biangbiang noodles and roujiamo (often described as a Chinese hamburger).

But your immersion in Chinese culture will go beyond sightseeing and food—it will come through your everyday interactions with the students, faculty, and community. The warmth and hospitality of the Chinese people are legendary, and your volunteer work will give you a deep connection to this fascinating and rapidly changing country.

One of the highlights of volunteering with Global Volunteers is the leadership and support you receive from our team. In Xi’an, you’ll be guided by Wang Bao Li, Global Volunteers’ China & Vietnam Country Manager. A passionate advocate for cultural exchange, Bao Li was born and raised in China and has been working with Global Volunteers since 2005. She holds a degree in English and has deep experience in volunteer management, having worked with countless volunteers over the years. Bao Li is not only an expert in her field—she is also an ambassador of Chinese culture. She will introduce you to the Chinese zodiac, share stories about local traditions, and help you navigate the cultural nuances of your experience in Xi’an. Her dedication to the success of each volunteer is unparalleled, and her leadership will ensure that your time in Xi’an is enriching, meaningful, and memorable.

You’re Needed Now in The First Service Programs Back in China

The need for English language education has never been more pressing, and students in Xi’an are eager to engage with volunteers who bring not only language skills but also a diverse set of experiences and perspectives. By volunteering in Xi’an, you’re helping to rebuild cultural bridges that were disrupted over the past few years. You’ll be part of something larger than yourself, contributing to global understanding and respect.

Ready to Make a Difference?

Are you ready to step into a role that will change lives—both yours and the students you’ll teach? Volunteering in Xi’an is a transformative experience, one that will allow you to make a lasting impact while immersing yourself in the rich culture and history of China.

Our May and October programs are filling up fast, so now is the time to sign up and secure your spot. Become part of a legacy that began in 1996, and help create a world of understanding, respect, and lasting friendships.
