Pledge to Volunteer in 2017

Volunteer in 2017

There are so many reasons to volunteer in 2017. Much has been written and studied about the value of volunteerism in the community and to the individual. Some claim that people who volunteer live longer, happier lives. Or, is it rather that happy, healthy people volunteer more? It may not matter which way is which. […]

Choose Urban Volunteer Opportunities Worldwide for Service Excitement

urban volunteer opportunities worldwide

In 1984, Global Volunteers began serving local people in the developing world, and by the early 1990s, we also responded to requests from urban community leaders.  In addition to caring for at-risk children and helping with labor projects, our service programs expanded to help teach conversational English and the basics of free enterprise in populous urban centers.  To this […]

Oprah Takes Notice of Global Volunteers

History of Global Volunteers on The Oprah Show

Oprah reported:  “When Bud Philbrook and Michele Gran opted out of a honeymoon cruise to take a more meaningful trip, they stumbled onto a rewarding way to enrich their own lives and help thousands of children around the world.”   Instead of their planned cruise, Bud and Michele spent a week in a rural village in Guatemala. After the local newspaper wrote a story about their unusual honeymoon, people started contacting them asking how they could plan a similar trip.

This unconventional honeymoon led to Global Volunteers’ founding in 1984. Since then, Global Volunteers has engaged nearly 39, 000 volunteers in over 200 communities on six continents. Watch the full honeymoon story on the Oprah Show>>
