How to Give: Easy Tax Deductions for 2020
A change in 2020 tax policy allows U.S. taxpayers to deduct up to $300 ($600 per couple) even if they take the standard deduction. Although $300 may not sound like much, as a donation, it can be a big deal to organizations like Global Volunteers struggling during the pandemic.
If you are thinking about making a donation to a charitable cause before the end of the year, this is an excellent time to do it. Did you know that recent legistation allows U.S. taxpayers to deduct up to $300 ($600 per couple) even if they take the standard deduction? This is a change due to the CARES Act as typically, taxpayers can only deduct charitable donations if they itemize their personal deductions. While $300 may not seem like much to some, it can go a long way toward helping organizations continue their important work during the pandemic.
This new “universal” deduction makes it easier for people to receive a tax benefit for giving and is exclusive to donations made before December 31, 2020. This deduction can reduce your adjusted gross income (by up to $300), which determines your eligibility for tax credits and other deductions. This type of donation must be made in cash, check, or credit card; stock, volunteer hours, and donated goods don’t qualify. And the donation must be made to a qualified 501(c)(3) organization, such as Global Volunteers. Eight-time volunteer Ken Dubuque says, “Knowing that programs are shut down due to Covid, as well as the increased need caused by this pandemic, the demand to assist is even greater now.”

Here are examples of what a $300 tax-deductible donation to Global Volunteers can provide:
- 30 mosquito nets for families in Tanzania to help protect them against malaria
- 12 child health exams
- One month of healthy meals and home visits for 12 families in the Reaching Children’s Potential Program
- Fuel-efficient stoves to 5 families in Tanzania
- Pre-natal care throughout their pregnancy for 2 moms in Tanzania
Those are just some of the ways that your $300 tax-deductible donation can impact children and families around the globe. To make your tax-deductible donation before December 31, visit our Gift Catalog or Donate Page:
“I support Global Volunteers because it is a true grassroots, on-the-ground monetary and volunteer effort, supporting community-defined needs. After participating in eight specific programs, I know my additional contributions will be just as effective as my volunteer time.”

Your $300 tax-deductible donation now, while volunteers are grounded by the pandemic, will help ensure that our support of our partner communities will continue in 2021.
Please consider taking advantage of this benefit before December 31 to support Global Volunteers’ work while we are unable to have volunteers on the ground. The children and families in our partner communities will be so grateful!
