Partners' Stories Nepal

Global Connections Transform Classrooms at St. Joseph School, Nepal

Children won my heart in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Dambar K.C., Principal of St. Joseph School and long-time Global Volunteers partner in Nepal, spoke with us about how international collaboration is transforming education in his community. With deep pride in his students and a clear vision for the future, he described how Global Volunteers bring fresh ideas, innovative teaching methods, and new energy to his classrooms. The volunteers, he says, not only improve students’ English and technology skills but also inspire teachers to dream bigger. His reflections reveal how global connections can open young minds, and why each volunteer’s presence leaves a lasting mark on Nepal’s next generation of learners.

When St. Joseph School first welcomed Global Volunteers, it was with a shared belief that education thrives on connection. “We welcomed Global Volunteers to foster meaningful exchange and bring fresh ideas into our community,” Principal Dambar K.C. explains. “They introduce new teaching methods and help us use technology more effectively in education.”

With that vision, St. Joseph began integrating new tools, computers, digital platforms, and online resources into daily lessons. These innovations are helping the school build a more inclusive and interactive learning environment, where both teachers and students can explore modern, engaging ways to learn.

Before each volunteer team arrives, the school ensures a smooth and thoughtful introduction. “Before the program starts, we have a meeting to get to know the volunteers and learn about their strengths,” Dambar says. “We match their interests with our needs and assign them to classrooms and subjects they will teach. A support person is always available to help them feel confident and comfortable during their time with us.”

Once in the classroom, the volunteers quickly become part of the St. Joseph family. They teach English and computer skills, collaborate on creative projects, and sometimes even help beautify the school with paintbrushes in hand. “Volunteers play a vital role in our students’ growth,” Dambar reflects. “Their support goes beyond the classroom. By sharing ideas and perspectives from around the world, they enrich our students’ understanding and create a truly global learning experience.”

The children, he says, respond with enthusiasm and openness. “Our students enjoy learning from volunteers. They are friendly, approachable, and enthusiastic, making it easy for students to participate and ask for help,” he shares. English naturally becomes the common language, helping students strengthen their communication skills while boosting confidence. “They create a safe and supportive space that encourages children to seek support with confidence,” Dambar adds.

This spirit of cooperation extends beyond the school walls. Parents, teachers, and community members have embraced the Global Volunteers partnership as part of their collective mission. “Our community, including teachers, staff, and parents, greatly appreciates the presence of the Global Volunteers teams,” Dambar says proudly. “Everyone welcomes them with warmth and excitement because of the long-standing friendship we’ve built over the years.”

For the volunteers, their time in Nepal is equally transformative. “Volunteering with our community helps build strong relationships and personal growth,” Dambar explains. “They improve their skills, learn about different cultures, and gain a broader view of the world. Most of all, they will always remember the love they received and the bright smiles of our students.”

Time for class.
When St. Joseph School first welcomed Global Volunteers, it was with a shared belief that education thrives on connection.

Looking ahead, Principal Dambar’s hopes for the partnership are ambitious and heartfelt. “Our dream is to create a lasting impact through enriched education, stronger community ties, and meaningful cultural exchange,” he shares. “We hope to expand programs, boost volunteer involvement, and foster collaboration to meet our students’ evolving needs.”

By welcoming Global Volunteers into its classrooms, St. Joseph School is nurturing not only academic excellence but also empathy, curiosity, and global citizenship. “By welcoming Global Volunteers, we support our students and broaden their perspectives with insights from around the world,” Dambar concludes. “Together, we are building a future where learning truly knows no boundaries.”

Every volunteer who joins St. Joseph School becomes part of a larger story, one of learning, connection, and hope. Your time, your skills, and your compassion can make a real difference in the lives of students eager to learn and teachers eager to grow. Request information about our Nepal service program here.
