News and Updates Malaysia

New Service Program Opens in Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Nestled in the heart of Southeast Asia, Malaysia is a captivating tapestry of cultural diversity, natural beauty, and modern innovation. With its exhilarating culture, vibrant festivals, and mouthwatering cuisine, this dynamic country entices travelers from around the globe.

Community Invitation

Amidst Malaysia’s rapid transformation and concerted efforts to embrace its rich heritage, Global Volunteers has been extended a warm invitation to the enchanting city of Johor Bahru by the Soroptimist International (SI) Club of Bangsar.

SI is a worldwide organization for women in management and the professions who work through service projects to advance human rights and women’s status.  Soroptimists work at all levels of civil society – local, national, and international – and are involved with a broad spectrum of women’s concerns.  SI works closely with other NGOs to promote positive social and economic changes that improve the lives of women, children, and families.  The organization had General Consultative Status with the United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Across the nation, the scarcity of English teaching staff and resources poses significant hurdles to education advancement, although learning English continues to be important for students’ education and job prospects.  In addition, training for special needs professionals is rare, so teachers often don’t have the necessary knowledge to fully support parents and their children with autism and Down Syndrome.  Individuals with disabilities too often are confronted with limited education and employment opportunities, despite their determined efforts.  Further, orphaned and impoverished children need additional love and attention to help them grow up to be strong and meaningful contributors to Malaysian society.  These community development circumstances led Soroptimist International Club of Bangsar to invite Global Volunteers to serve in Johor Bahru.

In just one or two weeks, you can change the arc of a Malaysian child’s life. Gain a new perspective of the world and add meaning to your own life as well.

Partnering for a Brighter Future

When you serve with Global Volunteers, we engage you to focus on children’s health and development.  We know that when children can reach their full potential, they can become active members of society.  That’s how investing in the children of Malaysia and securing their potential improves the country’s future.  You and every volunteer are unique links in a long chain of service, sustained by successive teams of volunteers, year after year, in partnership with community leaders.  As a single link in this chain, you offer your personal skills and expertise that may not otherwise be available to children and their families. In just one or two weeks, you can change the arc of a Malaysian child’s life. Gain a new perspective of the world and add meaning to your own life as well.

Malaysia Service Program Community Partners

Global Volunteers has been invited by five communities in Johor Bahur and surrounding areas to assist in critical community development projects.

Rotarc Children’s Education Center supports children aged 3 to 17, who are orphaned or come from single-parent families facing financial challenges. Volunteers are needed to assist teachers in providing personalized attention, engaging with preschoolers, and supporting older children learning English, math, and science.

Kiwanis Care Heart Centre provides education, training, and support for individuals with special needs. Volunteers with special education backgrounds or experience as parents of special needs children are needed to train staff in teaching techniques, conduct workshops for parents, and enhance teachers’ professional knowledge.

Villa Paulos Welfare Home cares for exploited, abused, and orphaned children aged 6 to 18. Volunteers provide after-school assistance in English, math, science, and geography, and engage children in various activities like games, music, and sports.

ICare Center provides shelter and food to very poor children and their families.  The children come to ICare Center after school to eat, play, and do homework. Volunteers are needed to teach them English and math and engage them in various games, art projects, and music. There is a piano at the center, but no one can play music.

Sri Ara International School is a secular school committed to a holistic education for students from diverse backgrounds. English is the primary medium of instruction. Sri Ara has a truly international, multicultural, multireligious atmosphere, with 80+ students from many different countries and religions. The 20 teachers are mainly Muslim women. Volunteers are needed to teach conversational English and provide the students a global perspective. Professionals with backgrounds in special education are also needed.

100 Lambs International School educates 1,200 students (aged 2 to 17) and finds it important for these future leaders of Malaysia to become true global citizens and succeed in multicultural environments.  Volunteers are needed to help the students practice public speaking, discuss the US and world geography with them, and help them practice conversational English.
