New Service Program Opens in Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Nestled in the heart of Southeast Asia, Malaysia is a captivating tapestry of cultural diversity, natural beauty, and modern innovation. With its exhilarating culture, vibrant festivals, and mouthwatering cuisine, this dynamic country entices travelers from around the globe.
Community Invitation
Amidst Malaysia’s rapid transformation and concerted efforts to embrace its rich heritage, Global Volunteers has been extended a warm invitation to the enchanting city of Johor Bahru by the Soroptimist International (SI) Club of Bangsar.
SI is a worldwide organization for women in management and the professions who work through service projects to advance human rights and women’s status. Soroptimists work at all levels of civil society – local, national, and international – and are involved with a broad spectrum of women’s concerns. SI works closely with other NGOs to promote positive social and economic changes that improve the lives of women, children, and families. The organization had General Consultative Status with the United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
Across the nation, the scarcity of English teaching staff and resources poses significant hurdles to education advancement, although learning English continues to be important for students’ education and job prospects. In addition, training for special needs professionals is rare, so teachers often don’t have the necessary knowledge to fully support parents and their children with autism and Down Syndrome. Individuals with disabilities too often are confronted with limited education and employment opportunities, despite their determined efforts. Further, orphaned and impoverished children need additional love and attention to help them grow up to be strong and meaningful contributors to Malaysian society. These community development circumstances led Soroptimist International Club of Bangsar to invite Global Volunteers to serve in Johor Bahru.
Partnering for a Brighter Future
When you serve with Global Volunteers, we engage you to focus on children’s health and development. We know that when children can reach their full potential, they can become active members of society. That’s how investing in the children of Malaysia and securing their potential improves the country’s future. You and every volunteer are unique links in a long chain of service, sustained by successive teams of volunteers, year after year, in partnership with community leaders. As a single link in this chain, you offer your personal skills and expertise that may not otherwise be available to children and their families. In just one or two weeks, you can change the arc of a Malaysian child’s life. Gain a new perspective of the world and add meaning to your own life as well.
